On August 9th, AABANY members and their family and friends gathered around the Great Lawn in Central Park for the annual AABANY Summer Picnic. The weather was perfect on this Sunday afternoon for everyone to relax, toss around frisbees and baseballs, and enjoy food.

Attendees enjoyed delicious Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches, catered by Saigon Sandwiches located on 369 Broome Street in Chinatown. An assortment of drinks and snacks were also provided.

Special thanks to the Young Lawyers Committee, Tax Committee, and Litigation Committee for planning and organizing this fun event!

If you were unable to attend, be sure to look out for this annual picnic next year!

On Saturday, August 16, AABANY and KALAGNY joined their Annual Picnics together for the first time to great success. Additional first for an AABANY picnic: banh mi sandwiches (versus a 6-foot sub) and bocce ball (versus tug of war and chubby bunny). Friends and family from AABANY and KALAGNY alike met in Central Park by the Diana Ross playground for a day of leisure. The weather was ideal for a relaxing picnic. At least we didn’t get rained out, like we did last year and the year before. Members, friends, family (and even a pet) from both AABANY and KALAGNY were present. The picnic ran from noon until about 5 pm, and the photo taken at around 3 pm included some sixty attendees. Thank you to KALAGNY for co-hosting, our Young Lawyers and Litigation Committees for organizing, and all who attended to make the day a true family outing.

AABANY Co-sponsors: Achieving Diversity in ADR

The AABANY Litigation Committee encourages anyone interested in pursuing a career as a neutral (arbitrator, mediator, etc.), and, in particular, learning about the specific advantages and challenges as a person of color, to attend the New York State Bar Association’s program entitled, “Achieving Diversity in the ADR Field: Overcoming Old Challenges and Seeking New Opportunities.” The program will be held on Tuesday, March 25th from 5:30-9:00 p.m. and, because AABANY is a participating and sponsoring bar association, the program will offer 2.5 FREE NY CLE credits in Skills to all AABANY members. A panel of renowned ADR providers, scholars, and administrators will discuss their practices for recruiting and selecting neutrals, the efforts they have undertaken to diversify their rosters of neutrals, and their efforts to further expose the users of their ADR services to racially and ethnically diverse panels of arbitrators and mediators. Another panel, moderated by AABANY member Theo Cheng, and comprising distinguished ADR neutrals, will provide perspectives on how to navigate a successful career as a neutral; recommending specific networking, marketing, and promotional activities; discussing how best to leverage diversity issues; and providing practical tips for increasing the opportunities for being selected as a neutral. Finally, there will be a discussion about strategies for addressing cross cultural issues in dispute resolution, followed by a networking reception. P.S. For those of you who are experiencing difficulties registering via the NYSBA’s website, you can alternatively send an email to Beth Gould at [email protected] with your full contact information (name, address, email, phone number), indicating that you are a member of AABANY. She will handle registering you for the event.

Litigation Committee Gathers for Happy Hour on May 9

The Litigation Committee celebrated its first Happy Hour for 2013 at The Stag’s Head on May 9 in midtown on the East Side.  After the rain cleared, a group of loyal and enthusiastic members, both old and new, straggled in and enjoyed an evening of friendly banter.  It was a good way to spend a beautiful spring evening in Midtown.

To learn more about the Litigation Committee and to find out how you can get involved, contact co-chairs Karen Kim and Concepcion Montoya at [email protected]

The Litigation Committee met on September 28, 2012 and was privileged to have the Honorable George A. Yanthis speak at the meeting.  Anna Mercado and the staff of Phillips Lytle LLP did a wonderful job hosting.

The meeting was well attended thanks to Judge Yanthis, who discussed preferred practices, notable cases and his path to the Judiciary.  Judge Yanthis also shared the importance of diversity and public advocacy, as exemplified by his own experience.  Attendees had the opportunity to ask practical questions on how to better advocate for their clients.  Afterwards, attendees remained to continue networking with each other.

Thanks to Francis Chin for the photos.
