AABANY Member Lisa Lim Recognized by The New York Real Estate Journal in its Women in Commercial Real Estate Spotlight

On November 9th, 2021 Akerman partner Lisa Lim and AABANY member was honored by New York Real Estate Journal in its Women in Commercial Real Estate Spotlight. A graduate of Wellesley College and Fordham Law School Lisa is a go-to resource in the city’s complex and dynamic market, Lisa’s practice focuses on real estate finance and development, economic development, and affordable housing. Lisa focuses her practice in real estate finance and development, economic development, and affordable housing. Her transactional experience includes representing borrowers, lenders, and government agencies in the structuring, negotiation, and closing of complex transactions. Lisa is a Fellow for the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL) and was recently ranked again by Super Lawyers Magazine in New York for real estate, a distinction she has held since 2015.

NAPABA Celebrates the Historic Confirmation of Tana Lin to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington

On Oct. 21, the U.S. Senate confirmed Tana Lin to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. 

“NAPABA congratulates Tana Lin on her historic confirmation to become the first Asian American Article III district court judge in the state of Washington,” said A.B. Cruz III, president of NAPABA. “She is a devout public servant who has an exemplary legal career as a civil rights attorney and former public defender who’s enforced civil rights statutes, federal anti-discrimination laws, and a variety of other complex litigation matters.

“In addition to her impeccable qualifications, Judge Lin has a life experience that many in our community can relate to. She immigrated to the United States from Taiwan when she was three years old, worked her way through school, and is a leader in the community. Judge Lin has also served as a past board member of the Asian Bar Association of Washington, where she continues to be an active member.”

AAPIs represent nearly 10% of the population and constitute the largest community of color in the state of Washington. President Biden has nominated two AAPIs to the Federal courts in Washington State.

With 30 years of legal experience, Judge Lin has been named as a Super Lawyer for Washington for her practice at Keller Rohrback LLP. She has worked at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia, the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the Michigan Poverty Law Program. Judge Lin is a graduate of the New York University School of Law and Cornell University. 

NAPABA commends President Biden for nominating Judge Lin to the bench and thanks Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell for their support of her nomination. Judge Lin’s confirmation increases the number of active AAPI Article III judges to 40 nationwide: 10 federal appellate court judges and 30 federal district court judges.

Stacy Wu & Karen Lim – Intellectual Property Rising Stars, Super Lawyers

Congratulations to Fross Zelnick attorneys Stacy Wu and Karen Lim, who have been named Rising Stars in Intellectual Property by Super Lawyers. Stacy is currently Co-Chair of AABANY’s Intellectual Property Committee. Karen is the former Co-Chair of the IP Committee and a current Board Director. 

Super Lawyers is a rating service of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have attained a high-degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The selection process includes independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations. The selection process for the Rising Stars list is the same as the Super Lawyers selection process, with one exception: to be eligible for inclusion in Rising Stars, a candidate must be either 40 years old or younger or in practice for 10 years or less.

Super Lawyers: Diversity, not Divinity – Rotating careers and keeping true to self launched Don H. Liu

In Tim Harper’s recent "Diversity, not Divinity" in Super Lawyers, Harper tells the story of AABANY Advisory Committee Member and Xerox Executive Vice President and General Secretary and Secretary Don H. Liu.

From his boyhood businesses and bicycle deliveries, plans to attend divinity school, realization that he liked “sinning far too much” to become a minister, civil rights ambitions, and his one day a month on the Xerox 1-800 helpline, Don shares the gambles he’s made on his way to the top. As much as you may believe that you know Don, this article provides some real insight into the multi-faceted inspirations and experiences that shape him today.

Illustrating Don’s passion and influence, Harper writes, “Liu doesn’t just talk diversity. He lives it. In 1999 when Liu got his first general counsel job… he had to build a new 13-lawyer in-house counsel team. Liu hired an executive recruiter and told him he wanted diversity. Initially the recruiter kept insisting that he couldn’t find qualified women or minority lawyers. Liu said: ‘You are talking to one, and I can’t be the only one out there. Find me diverse candidates, or I will find another headhunter.’”
