DA VANCE’S IMMIGRANT AFFAIRS PROGRAM AND THE ASIAN AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK LEAD A DEFERRED ACTION FRAUD PREVENTION SEMINAR FOR IMMIGRANTS IN CHINATOWN

Why: On June 15, 2012, President Barack Obama and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced that effective immediately, certain young people who were brought to the United States as young children will be eligible to receive deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal, and will be eligible to apply for work authorization. Since President Obama’s announcement, immigrants have been seeking reliable information on who is eligible and how to apply under the new policy. Although there is currently no information on the application process itself, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services is expected to issue guidelines on August 1, 2012.
“President Obama’s directive for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals will benefit many young people, but will also open the door for unscrupulous individuals to take advantage of others,” said District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. “My Immigrant Affairs Program is in the forefront of prosecuting these bad actors, as well as educating our communities on common scams and how to protect yourself. Due to the need to provide education and information about who is eligible for Deferred Action, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office’s Immigrant Affairs Program (IAP), the Asian American Bar Association of New York, and Catholic Charities will lead an informative seminar for the Chinese Community. The purpose of the seminar is to give members of the community information about the new program and tools to prevent becoming the victim of scam or a Deferred Action fraud. The event will feature presentations covering subjects of interest to the community, including legal immigration services, deferred action for childhood arrivals, and tips to prevent falling victim to these types of crimes.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office’s Immigrant Affairs Program (IAP) receives complaints about those who seek to victimize immigrants, including unscrupulous or fake attorneys, other individuals and agencies that offer so-called “services” to immigrants, and those who demand large sums of money for non-existent or useless “services” they have no intention or ability to provide.
